Looking after my skin in my 40’s

Looking after my skin in my 40’s

Its probably no secret to anyone that has read my blog for a while that in my day job, I am a skin geek, and I look after my clients skin with diligence and passion.

When it comes to my own skin, I am equally as careful, although I do experiment on my own skin with different products and regimes. Im always on the look out for fabulous new things to try, and being a bit of a skincare ingredient nut, always looking for products that I know are aiming to give me results. I like to get as much bang for my buck as possible!

I thought I would share my current skincare regime with you, but would love to hear of any products that are working for you at the moment. Let me know in the comments if there is something you think I should try.

My Skin Type in a nutshell

My skin can be quite changeable, but on the most part, is a classic normal-combination skin. I can get oilier around my forehead, but dehydrated around the eye and cheeks area. I rarely suffer from breakouts, but do have some enlarged pores around the sides of my nose and my chin. My skin can feel dry at times, so I am obsessed with using cosmeceutical moisturisers. My main skin concern is keeping my skin fresh, hydrated and as youthful as possible. I personally wouldn’t consider Botox or Fillers, (no judgement here, its just not for me) but will try any products I come across, that I think could aid my quest to keep my skin looking as good as I can.

AM Routine;

My morning is usually a rush, so my routine has to be quick and easy. In the shower I use the 3-in-one cleanser from the brand Purity. Its massaged in to dry skin, then I wash it off in the shower. Done. I always finish my shower with a splash of freezing water on my face. Its great for waking me up fully, but also great for boosting circulation and refining pores.

My moisturiser for the day is the AVST 5 moisturiser from Environ. Environ is a cosmeceutical brand, and has a “step up”range of moisturisers, (ie level 1-5). Iv worked my way up to 5, so will probably start introducing different serums soon.

Although strictly speaking I suppose my Jane Iredale powder would be classed as make up, its a skincare make up, so I will include it here. I use it to lightly dust over my make up, and as it has the added benefit of natural SPF, its upping the anti on my sun protection.

Another step that is in my AM routine at the moment is drinking a Skinade* drink. I was very kindly sent a 30 day supply of the drink to try by the company, and I have been having the daily drink for 26 days now. Skinade is a peach flavoured drink containing active ingredients, that are said to boost your body’s natural production of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid.  Drinking Skinade aims to combat the signs of ageing, increase hydration levels, improve the skins texture and suppleness and help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Although I am not convinced that a drink could do this all by itself, I like the idea that this drink will add another level to my skincare, by helping me boost collagen production from the inside, while I help to perfect my skin on the outside with the topical application of my skincare creams. At my age, I will take all the help I can get!

While I cannot confirm whether my collagen levels have increased at this stage, what I can say with certainty is that the clarity and glow to my skin is gooooooooood at the moment. (maybe coincidentally, but the dry skin I suffer on the front of my shins has improved massively) I have been complimented by different people on how fresh and glowing my skin looks. I do feel that my skin feels “plumper” somehow, and believe me when I say, this is the only time I am happy about anyone telling me something is plumper! I will probably try another 30days with Skinade, just to see how I feel about it, two months should give me a fair test run. If you would like to find out more details about Skinade, you can do so here.

PM Routine;

Like a lot of us, I adore taking my “face” off at the end of the day. I love the feeling of getting my skin squeaky clean and fresh. The first thing I do is use the Bobbi Brown eye make up remover to get my eyes off. I love this remover, it literally melts my make up off with no dragging or pulling, important when you get to my age, that ole eye area is delicate! My next step is my cleanser.

At the moment Im enjoying the ole faithful, Liz Earle hot cloth cleanser. The smell of this is amazing! I massage it all over my face, then remove with the cloth.

When my skin is clean and dry, I bring out the big guns. I use my Environ Cosmetic Roll-Cit to gently roller my skin. I have been using a roll cit for about 18 months, and on my last skin scan I had, (I’ll tell you about that another time), it showed that my hydration and texture of my skin had improved dramatically. Big ole thumbs up there! If you are not sure what a skin roller does, very simply, it makes your skincare work a gazillion percent harder, (maybe slight exaggeration) by making teeny tiny microchanels in the skin. It causes very minor, superficial (and unseen) trauma to the skin, encouraging the skin to go into its healing mode and produce natural collagen and elastin, therefore, healthy skin.

My eye gel is then applied, and I use the Environ CQuence eye gel. I swear by this product, Iv used it for 5 years, and genuinely believe that it makes a huge difference to how my eye area is ageing.

To finish, I pop a pump of my Retinol (you can see a full post Retinols – A Review if you’d like to know more) and two pumps of my AVST 5 moisturiser into my hand, mix them together and massage into my face.

A slick of Neal’s Yard lip balm, which I use every night, and I am ready for my bed!

Once a Week

I do love a face masque. I think that they add an injection of something extra and boost to your skincare routine. I use a few different masques, but at the moment I am using the Kiehlls Turmeric and Cranberry masque on a weekly basis. If you want to read about the start of my love affair with this masque, you can do so reading Discovering Kiehl’s helped me get over my brand blinkers. I feel that this masque brightens my skin, and makes it look radiant for a good few days after using it. I really like it!

Thats it! My current skincare routine. I do mix my routine up, especially masques and cleansers, but Im really enjoying what I am using at the moment. My skin is looking fairly good, and my hydration levels, which I can find difficult to keep up, are doing alright. Long may it continue………

*Indicates that the item was gifted to me, but my words and opinion will always be honest

Have you tried any of these products? Any cleansers/masques that you feel I just have to try? Id love to hear, let me know x

    Lovely, informative post Kerry! I don’t use any of these brands I must admit (some I have never heard of!), but some sound too good to be true 🙂
    That Kiehl’s mask sounds promising… might give that a go!
    Love, Kathleen x

      Im so pleased you found it useful x. I think as cosmeceutical brands tend to be sold in clinics etc, they are not as promoted, and rarely seen in shops as they have to be “prescribed” almost. The Environ products are distributed by the International Institute of Anti-Aging if you want more info xx

    I didn’t try any of these products before, but I have oily/combinational skin so I might give a go to that mask, because it looks like something I would enjoy. xx

      The masque is amazing, and great for your oily/combi skin. Its gently exfoliating too so doubles up on the benefits

      If you look at Cosmeceutical products, especially in moisturisers, as opposed to cosmetic, you wont go far wrong xxx

    Skinade sounds like an interesting product! With that packaging I think it would definitely feel like I was drinking from a lotion bottle though! x

    Very informative. As someone who is approaching 40 in a few years, it’s made me think I’d better get my act together skin wise. I barely do anything for it!

    You are certainly very knowledgeable about skincare, this was a super read! My mum loves the collagen drinks you can buy from Holland And Barrett, and she uses one of those rollers as well. As for me in my mid-20’s my skin is lucky if I remember to moisturise, ooops, think I need to work on that 🙈
