I know, I know, that dosent give you much time, but hear me out…..
The end of the year is fast approaching, and I know for many, including me and my family, it hasn’t been the best year. For that reason, I want to try to end it on a high, kind of like a sprinkle of the holy water to exorcise, (only we are using happiness and laughter to exorcise the rubbish bits, no holy water). So, I thought I would share with you a few things that I would love to see happen before the end of the year, and that I reckon you should have a bash at too! Please, feel free to add your own suggestions, and I would love to hear any little goals you have set to end the year with.
Ok, lets get this show on the road;
1 – Im sorry, my first one is going to be a whole load of cheesiness. In fact, its literally cheesier than a cheese board, but its the most important one. I want to sit down, all cosy in my pj’s and fluffy blanket, maybe a little G&T or Baileys on the go, and look back over 2017, ignore all the rubbish bits, and compile a list of all the things that I am grateful for this year. All the good things that happened, and all the positive steps that were made. Im going to write as many down in a note book as possible, so when it all feels a little heavy going, I can read all the best bits. A few of the things I will include are,
My eldest son getting a Distinction in his first year of college.
My boys raising over £3000 for Macmillan by completing the Tough Mudder
Regaining some work/life balance by closing my business, best decision ever!
There are so many more. It will be a good exercise to do.
2 – Plan a couple of trips for next year. We have already got a family holiday booked for July, but one of the plans we made last year when I decided to close my salon, was to get back to travelling more. Nik has a job that means he gets quite a bit of time off, so we had said we would do a few city breaks. That kinda went out the window as it turned out, but next year will be our year. Brugge and Sorrento are up on the list. I would like to plan out where we will stay, what we will do etc. We cant book until Nik has the go ahead from his Oncologist, but I can plan!
3 – Have a massive clear out. I know this one is boring, but there is nothing better than having a good ole de-clutter, especially to start a new year off. I did my wardrobes a few months back, I now want to tackle the other rooms in my house, especially the kitchen. My cupboards are full of plastic containers with no lids, or strangely, just lids that fit nothing! Its like the odd sock phenomenon, what the blooming heck happens?? Anyway, I would like to start the new year off clear space, clear mind and all that.
4 – Host a dinner party. I mean a full on, three course, posh table dinner party. Having people round for dinner is lovely, and I tend to just cook a roast or something, and its all quite casual usually. I want to have one where I dress my table to the nines, do three courses and make it all pretty. I really hope to get this in by the end of the year.
5 – Visit somewhere we have never been. At the start of this year, Nik and I started visiting lots of places, in the UK, where we hadnt been before. The idea was to find more places that were in our own back yard, and I started a series on the blog called Exploring England. We had some really fab trips, but again, it all came to an abrupt halt in July. So, if possible, I would like to visit somewhere we havent been. High on my list are Winchester, Bath and Cambridge.
6 – Sign up to a course to learn something new next year. I love to learn new things. In the last few years I have done a one day photography workshop, year long soft furnishings course and a two part creative writing course, (I WILL get that book finished), which I absolutely loved. I am finding that, as I now do less hours at work, the desire to learn new skills and make stuff is gaining in strength. I fancy trying learning to make jewellery or handbags. I also fancy trying my hand at clothes making or learning more about interior design. I hope to find a course I fancy and get signed up to it by the end of the year.
7 – Read one of the books that I have sitting on my shelf! When Nik was in hospital over the summer, I read loads sitting in there with a sedated him. I thoroughly rediscovered my love of reading and no social media. I haven’t read a book since! I have so many amazing books, fiction and non-fiction, sitting on my shelves waiting to be read, Im determined to read one by the end of the year.
8 – Go to a coffee shop with my laptop and do some work. I know this might sound a bit strange, but Iv always wanted to do it! I want to find a cosy corner somewhere in a nice coffee shop, get myself a delicious drink, and tap away on my laptop either getting a chapter of my book written, or a blog post. Im thinking the coffee shops could be a tad busy this time of the year mind, with all the christmas shoppers, so might be between christmas and new year.
9 – Have a day of old, favourite films. This is something that I rarely do. I would love to have a totally self indulgent day, watching some of my favourite films, cosy on the settee, candles on and tea on the go. Perfect. Some of the films on my list would be Notting Hill, Bridget Jones, Breakfast at Tiffanys and Wizard of Oz.
10 – Make Gingerbread men or Christmas cookies. Ok, Im no domestic goddess, thats a given, and I never bake. However, this time of year, programmes like Kirsties Homemade Christmas and Nigella at Christmas make me want to venture into that strange room in my home, the kitchen. I even bought a gingerbread man cookie cutter the other day, with this very thought in mind so I must be serious. I would love to be, just once, that Mum that says to her kids when they come in the door, Oh hey boys, there is freshly baked cookies on the work top” (Instead of my usual, hey boys, be a love and pour mumma another gin)………… disclaimer; I never ask my boys to pour me gin…….in the day………
Yep, gingerbread men and christmas cookies will be baked by the end of the year. I cant promise they will be edible, but I will try…….
So, thats it! My ten things that I would like to do by the end of the year. Will you try to do any of them? Is there anything that you would like to achieve? I would love to hear, as ever, in the comments xxx
