Ten Things to Try to Do before we hit 2018

I know, I know, that dosent give you much time, but hear me out…..

The end of the year is fast approaching, and I know for many, including me and my family, it hasn’t been the best year. For that reason, I want to try to end it on a high, kind of like a sprinkle of the holy water to exorcise, (only we are using happiness and laughter to exorcise the rubbish bits, no holy water). So, I thought I would share with you a few things that I would love to see happen before the end of the year, and that I reckon you should have a bash at too! Please, feel free to add your own suggestions, and I would love to hear any little goals you have set to end the year with.

Ok, lets get this show on the road;

1 – Im sorry, my first one is going to be a whole load of cheesiness. In fact, its literally cheesier than a cheese board, but its the most important one. I want to sit down, all cosy in my pj’s and fluffy blanket, maybe a little G&T or Baileys on the go, and look back over 2017, ignore all the rubbish bits, and compile a list of all the things that I am grateful for this year. All the good things that happened, and all the positive steps that were made. Im going to write as many down in a note book as possible, so when it all feels a little heavy going, I can read all the best bits. A few of the things I will include are,

My eldest son getting a Distinction in his first year of college.

My boys raising over Β£3000 for Macmillan by completing the Tough Mudder

Regaining some work/life balance by closing my business, best decision ever!

There are so many more. It will be a good exercise to do.

2 – Plan a couple of trips for next year. We have already got a family holiday booked for July, but one of the plans we made last year when I decided to close my salon, was to get back to travelling more. Nik has a job that means he gets quite a bit of time off, so we had said we would do a few city breaks. That kinda went out the window as it turned out, but next year will be our year. Brugge and Sorrento are up on the list. I would like to plan out where we will stay, what we will do etc. We cant book until Nik has the go ahead from his Oncologist, but I can plan!

3 – Have a massive clear out. I know this one is boring, but there is nothing better than having a good ole de-clutter, especially to start a new year off. I did my wardrobes a few months back, I now want to tackle the other rooms in my house, especially the kitchen. My cupboards are full of plastic containers with no lids, or strangely, just lids that fit nothing! Its like the odd sock phenomenon, what the blooming heck happens?? Anyway, I would like to start the new year off clear space, clear mind and all that.

4 – Host a dinner party. I mean a full on, three course, posh table dinner party. Having people round for dinner is lovely, and I tend to just cook a roast or something, and its all quite casual usually. I want to have one where I dress my table to the nines, do three courses and make it all pretty. I really hope to get this in by the end of the year.

5 – Visit somewhere we have never been. At the start of this year, Nik and I started visiting lots of places, in the UK, where we hadnt been before. The idea was to find more places that were in our own back yard, and I started a series on the blog called Exploring England. We had some really fab trips, but again, it all came to an abrupt halt in July. So, if possible, I would like to visit somewhere we havent been. High on my list are Winchester, Bath and Cambridge.

visit somewhere new

6 – Sign up to a course to learn something new next year. I love to learn new things. In the last few years I have done a one day photography workshop, year long soft furnishings course and a two part creative writing course, (I WILL get that book finished), which I absolutely loved. I am finding that, as I now do less hours at work, the desire to learn new skills and make stuff is gaining in strength. I fancy trying learning to make jewellery or handbags. I also fancy trying my hand at clothes making or learning more about interior design. I hope to find a course I fancy and get signed up to it by the end of the year.

7 – Read one of the books that I have sitting on my shelf! When Nik was in hospital over the summer, I read loads sitting in there with a sedated him. I thoroughly rediscovered my love of reading and no social media. I haven’t read a book since! I have so many amazing books, fiction and non-fiction, sitting on my shelves waiting to be read, Im determined to read one by the end of the year.

8 – Go to a coffee shop with my laptop and do some work. I know this might sound a bit strange, but Iv always wanted to do it! I want to find a cosy corner somewhere in a nice coffee shop, get myself a delicious drink, and tap away on my laptop either getting a chapter of my book written, or a blog post. Im thinking the coffee shops could be a tad busy this time of the year mind, with all the christmas shoppers, so might be between christmas and new year.

9 – Have a day of old, favourite films. This is something that I rarely do. I would love to have a totally self indulgent day, watching some of my favourite films, cosy on the settee, candles on and tea on the go. Perfect. Some of the films on my list would be Notting Hill, Bridget Jones, Breakfast at Tiffanys and Wizard of Oz.

10 – Make Gingerbread men or Christmas cookies. Ok, Im no domestic goddess, thats a given, and I never bake. However, this time of year, programmes like Kirsties Homemade Christmas and Nigella at Christmas make me want to venture into that strange room in my home, the kitchen. I even bought a gingerbread man cookie cutter the other day, with this very thought in mind so I must be serious. I would love to be, just once, that Mum that says to her kids when they come in the door, Oh hey boys, there is freshly baked cookies on the work top” (Instead of my usual, hey boys, be a love and pour mumma another gin)………… disclaimer; I never ask my boys to pour me gin…….in the day………

Photo not taken by me, its from free image site Pexels

Yep, gingerbread men and christmas cookies will be baked by the end of the year. I cant promise they will be edible, but I will try…….

So, thats it! My ten things that I would like to do by the end of the year. Will you try to do any of them? Is there anything that you would like to achieve? I would love to hear, as ever, in the comments xxx

Haha I bought cookie cutters to as part of my Christmas baking plan! I’d like to try out some of the German recipes because they have delicious biscuits! If you do make it to Winchester before Christmas, their Christmas market is lovely.

      December 5, 2017 / 5:07 pm

Oh really! We must let each other know if we make them haha! Yes I have heard Winchester is beautiful, so that has the top spot on my list. Does it get manic busy?

      • December 5, 2017 / 6:51 pm

If you do go, be sure to check the dates! We went on 21st last year and everything had already closed down πŸ™ I’ve been a couple of times – we’ll probably go during the week before Christmas on a weekday, but even at the weekend I don’t think it’s too crazy in terms of the number of people.

Oh brilliant, thanks for the tip! I will have a look online. We are thinking about going to the Christmas market at Leeds Castle on Sunday, never been to that one so thats one ticked off my list if we get there! xx

  3. December 5, 2017 / 8:37 pm

You have inspired me to think about the positives of this year, too often I only focus on the negatives! I’ve always wanted to do the take my laptop to coffee shop and work thing but always find myself feeling self conscious for some reason! But I love this list, I may try and do a few things a little bit different before 2018 xx

      December 5, 2017 / 8:57 pm

Yayyyy! Yes Grace! I love that you feel inspired to look at your positives. Im the same as you regarding feeling self concious, but its good for us to push out the comfort zone isnt it. Iv found myself doing a lot of that this year! Let me know if you do any of them, or any off your own list. Id love to hear xxx

      • December 5, 2017 / 9:01 pm

It’s so important to focus on positives and it’s definitely something I want to start doing more of! that’s so true, I’m sure that if I did it I would feel fine about it.. it’s the thought more than anything! Will do Kerry xxx

  4. December 6, 2017 / 9:00 am

This is such a cool idea πŸ™‚ December is always so busy so it’s nice to have a list of stuff that you want to get done πŸ™‚ exploring England sounds like so much fun and is something I have always wanted to do- we always go to these far off exotic places but what about the places in our backyard? I have been to Oxford, Durham and Brighton so far but I still need to do Cambridge πŸ™‚

Yes I agree, England is such a beautiful country but we tend to hop on a plane whenever we can. I love Brighton, I always have such a good time there. Thank you for reading and taking the time to comment xx

  5. December 6, 2017 / 9:07 am

This is really great! In terms of writing down the positives from the year – since January I have been writing down any achievements or good memories for all the family (you know, like: “L won sprints on sports day”, or “B came top in maths” or just “had a great weekend with xx and xx”) on little pieces of paper and folding them up. They have all gone into a decorative jar and we plan to tip them all out on NY Eve and read them out to bring back the year’s good memories! Good times!

      December 6, 2017 / 9:14 am

Ohhh thats a beautiful idea! How lovely. That makes me feel so happy for your NY Eve, what a great way to look back on the year. I bet the jar is bursting with memories. Thank you so much for sharing (and reading lol) xxx

  6. December 6, 2017 / 10:08 am

I love reading posts like this. I enjoy reflecting at the end of the year and creating new goals. Travelling sounds amazing and I love gingerbread cookies. I am hoping to be organised (declutter) in the next few weeks and also to continue making steps towards my plans next year. x

      December 6, 2017 / 11:55 am

Thank you so much, Im glad you enjoyed. Its a perfect way to end a year isnt it. I get so much satisfaction out of clearing stuff I tend to hoard, out of my house. I think Im focused on the kitchen as Id really like to cook more. Those gingerbread men might get made yet haha! Thank you for reading xx

  7. December 6, 2017 / 11:12 am

This could be my list as well. Travel always enjoy and will be planning (hopefully) a trip in 2018. Declutter seems like I have a goodwill bag on my bedroom floor all the time. I have gone to work in coffee shops and enjoy it as different atmosphere. A good book! Oh course! Love you are writing down positive for 2017. We sometimes take things for granted.

      December 6, 2017 / 11:58 am

  8. December 6, 2017 / 11:47 am

Good luck with the list, it looks great! I might settle for getting a declutter done over Christmas, but I’m going to take a few minutes to set down a few things I want to do.

Thank you for stopping by Niall. I think its very therapeutic to get rid of stuff that we no longer use dont you? Its like a purge! Yes sit down and write some bits down, nothing like ticking off a list. Thanks for taking the time to comment x

  9. December 6, 2017 / 2:36 pm

Thanks for reminding me that I still have to do that clear out which I wanted to do in… February 2017. It’s such a tedious thing and I can never get myself to do it… Good luck with the baking! It’s so much fun especially with music on! S. xx

Love this list! I think one thing I want to do by the end of the year is get more organized with my blog. I know that if I just take the time to sit down and really work on it, it’ll take so much stress off my shoulders. I’m just lazy and love to procrastinate.

    • kerrylifeandloves
      December 6, 2017 / 10:35 pm

Haha! I hear ya! Im a procrastinator of the highest standard. Next year I too want to organise my blog and posts better. I have no schedule, my Insta is a random mess and I get so behind on my photography. We WILL be organised 2018! Thank you for reading xx

  13. December 7, 2017 / 6:59 am

Oh, I absolutely love this list, Kerry! Coffee shops are my favorite place to blog! I have one that I go to when I really need to get stuff done. I am the most productive at them! πŸ™‚ I have found that the best way to accomplish things like that and the reading is to just do it! I’ve finally started reading some of the things I’ve put off for years, and I CAN’T STOP! I have no down that you will be able to accomplish at least most of these goals before the new year rolls around! πŸ™‚

Ah thank you so much! I agree, about just doing it ad I literally started a new book that Iv been aiming to read, yesterday! I love that you find it productive at coffee shops, I really think I would too. I am planning on heading into one between christmas and new year. Thank you so much for reading, I appreciate you leaving a comment xxx

      • December 8, 2017 / 7:09 am

I hope that you are able to make it to a coffee shop when you plan on it! And I hope the book you started is better than you could have hoped for! πŸ™‚

You’re such a positive person my love, and you’d absolutely love Bath when you visit! Hope Nik gets the green light soon so that you can all go places and do the things on this list as a family. Also working in coffee shops is the best thing ever, I love the atmosphere xx

Thank you so much, I try hard to keep positive, it keeps me sane haha xx Im looking at Air bnb as an option for Bath too, people keep recommending it. Im definitely heading to a coffee shop, in-between christmas and new year could be a good time. Thanks for reading my lovely xxx

  15. December 24, 2017 / 10:04 pm

I’ve always wanted to be that person in the corner of a coffee shop, typing away, drinking latte after latte!
