Some Changes on this ole Blog of Mine

This is just a little catch up post really, a follow up from my Revisiting or Setting Goals post a few weeks back (and I would really appreciate your opinions). My usual product review post will be posted in the next day or two, so this is just a quickie. I thought Id update you on a few little changes that are happening over here at Kerry Life and loves and Id really appreciate your thoughts on it all. Iv wanted to have a little shimmy and shake up for a while, as I feel like I get lost with it all sometimes! If any of you follow me on Instagram, you may have seen my post about how I have been feeling a strong need to find some more structure in my blog, and life in general! I sat down and did some planning and some working out, and a few changes are happening over here, and in my life also.

As I said in my April post, I had made the decision to drop my “day job” working hours down a little, only by two days a month initially, but its a start. This started this month. Time is something that there never seems to be enough of! I wanted to find more time to write, both my blog and my book, so this feels like a positive step. Im really hoping it works out that way! I started my blog in part, to help me get into a regular writing habit, yet, as we all know, blog writing takes far more time than anyone anticipates! I have not wrote anything  of any real value to my book since I started my blog, and this scares me! My efforts are not being spread evenly, and, as Iv mentioned before, my Mum told me on my birthday last month that its time. That book needs finishing. Im 45, she is right! Im hoping these extra two days a month will help with that.

My blog began its life as a beauty/lifestyle blog, but Im not to sure what it has evolved into! I love exploring make up and sharing my finds with you all, but they are actually often my least read posts, so does that mean people don’t enjoy those type of posts? Or, I wonder if because I don’t stick to a niche, that means people are never sure what I blog about? What do you think? I like to read blogs that are not particular “niche”, but, Iv noticed that the blogs I pop back to on a very regular basis, tend to be beauty blogs because I know what I can expect there. Does that make sense? Or maybe its because I like to buy a lot of make up haha!

This leads to wanting to get a little more structure over here. I think I need it and its something I have been talking about for a while. At the moment, I post what I like, when I like, and cover any subject, and that style of blogging kinda suits my personality, its chaotic, like me! However, Id really like to become a little more organised. I swear I would gain more time back if I had more order! Time is something I seem to struggle with, (especially for taking photos) so if I get more structure, it would help with that Im certain. What Im thinking, and Id really appreciate your feedback on this, is having set days where set topics are posted. For a rough example, (and this is purely as an example) first Tuesday of the month – cuppa and a chat, Second Tuesday of the month – Be you own skincare expert, Saturdays – product reviews, The other Tuesdays – lucky dip (as in anything and everything). Does anyone else have a structure like this? If you follow blogs that have a structure, do you know the days they post etc? Id love to know your thoughts.

Something else Iv felt lately, is that I cover too many subjects. Iv said this before, but I was once described as the “lucky dip blog” and I do like that, but Im not sure if its a little bit of a free for all. I kinda love everything, so like to write about everything, but even I sometimes think jeeez Kerry, pick a blooming subject! I write my blog for me, not to people please, but I do dart about all over the place don’t I. Chatting to my husband the other day, I asked him how he would describe my subject of my blog if he were explaining it to someone. He couldn’t. He said it was random. Is that a problem? What are your thoughts on this? I wonder if I covered just a couple of subjects, Id have more structure?

A positive change I have made, (and that has taken the completely self imposed pressure off me), is spend a lot less time on social media. As I said in my last cuppa and a chat post, I was finding I was reaching to look at my socials a few times a day, letting it get in my head and that just isn’t me. I visit my socials every few days now, and it is much healthier for me, and I have gone back to being how I always felt about social media. Its not life, its just apps on my phone! Im still going to be around on there, but waaaayyyyyyy less! If my husbands illness taught us anything, its that life is not for living through a phone!

On the total and complete flip side of what I said earlier, I really enjoy interiors and travel, (I have an obsession with interiors Instagram feeds) and really fancy bringing a little more of those to the blog. Even book reviews. I am an avid reader and adore books, so often wonder if sharing my reading list with you would be of interest? Like a monthly roundup type of thing? I know that is a complete contradiction to what I have just said as it would be bringing it yet more subjects haha! Im fickle, what can I say! It would only happen if I decide that a scheduled style of blogging isnt working for me. I might give a schedule a go, see if it works.

I currently try to post 1-2 times a week, but I think that once a week is probably more realistic for me if I want to really knuckle down and chase my dream! That book wont write itself! I think you can probably tell I need to find some balance with my life in general! There are many reasons for my chaotic mind, but thats a post for another day!

So, I hope you bare with me while I try and implement and sort out some structure. As you can probably tell, I feel like I have come to a bit of a cross roads over here! It could all go west and I end up just free styling like I do now haha! I just feel that I need to be more time savvy. I would love any input from you all. If your not a blog writer yourself, do you like the idea of structure on blogs? Those that are writers, what do you think about blogs having more specific subjects? Let me know your experiences/opinion xx

I think that structure is a very good idea, but I am completely unable to be strict enough to keep to a schedule myself…nor enough time 😉 good luck with your changes. I look forward to the results 🙂

Ahh see I am exactly the same! I am rubbish at being strict with myself. I get distracted by anything and everything! I often feel like I need a “life PA” . Someone that organises me and tells me (and nags me) what I need to be doing and when haha! Im rubbish! I have wrote out a schedule for the last two weeks of May, and the whole of June. Lets see how that pans out hahaha!

I love reading your blog Kerry and whilst I understand you thinking about structure I like the eclectic mix of topics, it’s like when I am about to read your latest post, I think to myself, “what has she discovered or what has she been up to” rather than opening your blog and knowing exactly what you will be writing about. Maybe the structure you need is more about time management

Ahhh thank you, thats so lovely to hear. I think you have hit the nail on the head about me needing time management. Maybe Im looking in the wrong place for my structure! Thank you for your view, great to get your input xxx

Thank you so much for your view Karen, I really appreciate it! I am such a book nerd, I get through about 4 a month, so maybe a monthly round up could work? I appreciate your input, its great to hear what the people who read my blog think xxxx

  4. May 8, 2018 / 11:33 am

Kerry I love your blog and everything you post about. I’m aware that’s probably not very helpful to you at all lol but i love your style of writing so could easily sit and read a post about the weather if that’s what you chose for your subject;-) Good luck with your changes and I’ll always be here supporting you 🙂 xxxx

Hi Kerry. I love reading your blog no matter what the subject. I’ve mentioned before that the very first post I read of yours was a cuppa and a chat post, which was so thought provoking, that I’ve been following you ever since. I actually really enjoy the ‘lucky dip’ feel and look forward to seeing what each post will bring. Whatever direction you take, I will follow you. Regarding the subjects you mentioned, a monthly book round up sounds like a really good idea to me and it would also be interesting to read your thoughts on interiors. x

Tracey thank you so much for comment, and lovely compliment! Thats so nice to hear that you enjoy the lucky dip feel (that term sums my blog up so perfectly). Im so happy you enjoy the cuppa and a chat series too, if Im honest, they are my favourite to write! One of my readers mentioned that perhaps its more time management Im searching for rather than changes on my blog, and I think she could be right! Thank you so much for your input, its so valuable to me xxx

  6. May 9, 2018 / 2:33 pm

Personally I prefer blogs that cover a little bit of everything as I find them more interesting (and I’m nosy about the person behind the blog!) It sounds that structure or a niche would possibly make you more stressed as you ave a lot of different things you want to write about, Your blog should be your outlet, covering whatever you want or feel comfortable with.

Ahhh I think I agree, I could feel more pressure couldn’t I. I think I just worry that i sound like a rambling old Aunt sometimes, jumping about all over different subjects. But, you are right, I write my blog as a release from life’s stresses. Its not my job or my wage, it should be all fun! Thank you lovely xx

  7. May 9, 2018 / 3:16 pm

Hmm that’s a tough one. I click on your posts because I like you and your style of writing. Ok if you were writing a post about something that really didn’t interest me, like football, I probably wouldn’t read it, but I enjoy the variety. I do think that having a series or two can help – not so much because of specific days, but if people liked the first part, they’re likely to be looking out for the next one, and it lets you get a bit deeper into things. When I was writing my book, I had to set aside time for it in the diary, like a meeting I had to go to, so that I would get it done and not think of 101 other things that were maybe less important but more urgent. Even setting a deadline for different stages can help. Whatever you decide to do re the blog topics, be you and keep having fun! XX

Ahh thats nice of you to say, but have no fear, I know nothing about football, (despite 30 years of standing on football sidelines watching) haha. I have been thinking about this a lot today, and I think its time management that is needed in my life, not only in my blog. Im thinking a schedule in my day to day stuff, just like you mention, is what I need. Im going to try to schedule my next month, and see if that helps with the chaos in my life! Thank you for your help Kirsty, your input is always so appreciated x

As you know I like more old school blogs, so of course I tend to read your beauty posts less than the “cuppa and chat” posts. But I like youre beauty posts too because you’re genuine as a blogger, your nice personality and authenticity shines through. I always prefer blog posts where you get to know the blogger a little, because I think that the reason people read blogs (or used to read blogs?) is because they are – or used to – be written by ordinary people that you can relate to, not a fashion magazine written by a professional writer.. so I suppose that lack of structure (although I think your blog structure is fine) is a good tihng, because if I wanted to read perfectly organized content, I would read a magazine of sorts. In blogs I’m looking for a real person and content where I feel I can relate. And if I can’t find that, the blog in question isn’t interesting.

But again, this is me, I’m old fashioned when it comes to blogs.
And – I definitely don’t agree with your husband. Your blog isn’t random!!!

Ohhh now thats an interesting angle, and funnily enough, Im exactly the same as you. I prefer the less “perfect” blogs. I like to see someone as real, and you are right, the too perfect blogs come across too magazine like. I hadnt thought of it that way! I am also old fashioned, you and I have read blogs for many years, so we remember the old, less constructed and edited blogs. I miss those! Thank you so much for your lovely compliments and I really appreciate your honesty. I love that you can even enjoy the beauty posts when its not really your thing, that makes me happy! I have a few cuppa and a chat posts coming up, just got to try to get some photos done! (I always struggle with photos for those posts) thank you Susanne, I very much appreciate your comment xxx

My spelling in that comment was horrible, lol, so many typos!! Anyway, I just wanted to add also that if you have a specific type of post – like you have the cuppa and chat and I have the weekly whiskey review – deciding to post them on specific and regular days helps a lot to be organised with your writing so I really think it’s a good idea. The reader will also know when to go to the blog for a specific post category. Then allow for a small amount of flexibility if necessary, like recently I’ve been busy and away a lot in the weekends and haven’t been able to keep the WOTW post on Sundays every time. I’ve tried to post it Sunday or the beginning of the week at least, with the goal of posting it on Sunday. We’re only human!

Ahh dont sweat it, Im the worlds worst speller so would have taken no notice lol. Thats a great idea Susanne, and something that I think I might implement, even if its just for my series posts. I do struggle with time, so it may not always work out, but I like your idea of at least aiming for it! Good shout xx

  9. May 11, 2018 / 8:56 pm

Hey Missy!! Hope all is good!!

I may have had my head in the clouds and completly missed this but, a BOOK?!? What?? Tell me more!!
Im not sure about anyone else but for me, I return for the person, the writing, the laughs and phrases, not necisarily the topic. I love lifestyle posts, but if im not cliking with the post words etc, I’m not sticking around!

Do what feels good, post what you want, thats the beauty of blogging!! Do keep an eye on your posts that get the most traction. Mine always surprise me and sre never what I think they are! Go with that and see where it takes you!

Haha! Its becoming a common theme, me moaning about not getting anything written. I have been trying to write a book for 20 years! i have 2.5 chapters written, all the character profiles, lots of scribbling! I have always wanted to write a book, even if it dosent go anywhere, I want to get it written! One day……..haha
I agree with you, I have been really surprised at the response to this post, as it seems no one minds my randomness! I really thought people might think I jumped about too much. Im so pleased! Im just gonna carry on being my random self haha! Thanks lovely xxx

  10. May 12, 2018 / 1:54 pm

interiors sound good. Maybe some fashion? I know you are a stylish lady! As for structure, can you help me out on that when you’ve found your way?! I’m useless! lsi, I think you would be great at vlogging. I love your Instagram stories.

Thank you so much for your input Laurie, I really appreciate it. Fashion always scares me as I just kind of do my own thing and dont really have much clue! Shoes and handbags, yep, could talk about them all day, but since putting on weight Im rubbish with clothes! I love your faith in me re vlogging, but id be useless. Im literally the clumsiest person in the world hahaha xx

  11. May 21, 2018 / 9:52 am

I think structure is wonderful for easy navigation on your blog but I love that you blog about things other than beauty and lifestyle – you know how much I adore your cuppa and chat series. I started off wanting to blog about beauty only and thinking that would be my niche, but I’ve loved writing about other things and sharing so much more with my readers. Can’t wait to see the ideas you have up your sleeve! xx

Its weird how we start off thinking we would write a certain way isnt it, but I suppose that is the beauty of blogging, it can evolve and change with us. I do love writing about make up, I can talk make up all day, but I do find I blooming love writing things that inspire discussion. I love hearing all opinions. I think structure is needed, but I do think I will still blog about whatever floats my boat at the time hahaha! Glad to see you back my lovely, well done on your hard work xxx

I love reading your comments x
