This is just a little catch up post really, a follow up from my Revisiting or Setting Goals post a few weeks back (and I would really appreciate your opinions). My usual product review post will be posted in the next day or two, so this is just a quickie. I thought Id update you on a few little changes that are happening over here at Kerry Life and loves and Id really appreciate your thoughts on it all. Iv wanted to have a little shimmy and shake up for a while, as I feel like I get lost with it all sometimes! If any of you follow me on Instagram, you may have seen my post about how I have been feeling a strong need to find some more structure in my blog, and life in general! I sat down and did some planning and some working out, and a few changes are happening over here, and in my life also.
As I said in my April post, I had made the decision to drop my “day job” working hours down a little, only by two days a month initially, but its a start. This started this month. Time is something that there never seems to be enough of! I wanted to find more time to write, both my blog and my book, so this feels like a positive step. Im really hoping it works out that way! I started my blog in part, to help me get into a regular writing habit, yet, as we all know, blog writing takes far more time than anyone anticipates! I have not wrote anything of any real value to my book since I started my blog, and this scares me! My efforts are not being spread evenly, and, as Iv mentioned before, my Mum told me on my birthday last month that its time. That book needs finishing. Im 45, she is right! Im hoping these extra two days a month will help with that.
My blog began its life as a beauty/lifestyle blog, but Im not to sure what it has evolved into! I love exploring make up and sharing my finds with you all, but they are actually often my least read posts, so does that mean people don’t enjoy those type of posts? Or, I wonder if because I don’t stick to a niche, that means people are never sure what I blog about? What do you think? I like to read blogs that are not particular “niche”, but, Iv noticed that the blogs I pop back to on a very regular basis, tend to be beauty blogs because I know what I can expect there. Does that make sense? Or maybe its because I like to buy a lot of make up haha!
This leads to wanting to get a little more structure over here. I think I need it and its something I have been talking about for a while. At the moment, I post what I like, when I like, and cover any subject, and that style of blogging kinda suits my personality, its chaotic, like me! However, Id really like to become a little more organised. I swear I would gain more time back if I had more order! Time is something I seem to struggle with, (especially for taking photos) so if I get more structure, it would help with that Im certain. What Im thinking, and Id really appreciate your feedback on this, is having set days where set topics are posted. For a rough example, (and this is purely as an example) first Tuesday of the month – cuppa and a chat, Second Tuesday of the month – Be you own skincare expert, Saturdays – product reviews, The other Tuesdays – lucky dip (as in anything and everything). Does anyone else have a structure like this? If you follow blogs that have a structure, do you know the days they post etc? Id love to know your thoughts.
Something else Iv felt lately, is that I cover too many subjects. Iv said this before, but I was once described as the “lucky dip blog” and I do like that, but Im not sure if its a little bit of a free for all. I kinda love everything, so like to write about everything, but even I sometimes think jeeez Kerry, pick a blooming subject! I write my blog for me, not to people please, but I do dart about all over the place don’t I. Chatting to my husband the other day, I asked him how he would describe my subject of my blog if he were explaining it to someone. He couldn’t. He said it was random. Is that a problem? What are your thoughts on this? I wonder if I covered just a couple of subjects, Id have more structure?
A positive change I have made, (and that has taken the completely self imposed pressure off me), is spend a lot less time on social media. As I said in my last cuppa and a chat post, I was finding I was reaching to look at my socials a few times a day, letting it get in my head and that just isn’t me. I visit my socials every few days now, and it is much healthier for me, and I have gone back to being how I always felt about social media. Its not life, its just apps on my phone! Im still going to be around on there, but waaaayyyyyyy less! If my husbands illness taught us anything, its that life is not for living through a phone!
On the total and complete flip side of what I said earlier, I really enjoy interiors and travel, (I have an obsession with interiors Instagram feeds) and really fancy bringing a little more of those to the blog. Even book reviews. I am an avid reader and adore books, so often wonder if sharing my reading list with you would be of interest? Like a monthly roundup type of thing? I know that is a complete contradiction to what I have just said as it would be bringing it yet more subjects haha! Im fickle, what can I say! It would only happen if I decide that a scheduled style of blogging isnt working for me. I might give a schedule a go, see if it works.
I currently try to post 1-2 times a week, but I think that once a week is probably more realistic for me if I want to really knuckle down and chase my dream! That book wont write itself! I think you can probably tell I need to find some balance with my life in general! There are many reasons for my chaotic mind, but thats a post for another day!
So, I hope you bare with me while I try and implement and sort out some structure. As you can probably tell, I feel like I have come to a bit of a cross roads over here! It could all go west and I end up just free styling like I do now haha! I just feel that I need to be more time savvy. I would love any input from you all. If your not a blog writer yourself, do you like the idea of structure on blogs? Those that are writers, what do you think about blogs having more specific subjects? Let me know your experiences/opinion xx
