What Iv Read This Month – Book Roundup

Bookworm. Book nerd. Avid reader. Book lover. All terms that my family and myself have used to describe me. Im not a great sleeper, I survive on about 4/5 hours a night, so get through a lot of books! I devour books, I love to read, and I will always have a book on the go. I read from many genres, although bloody love a crime/thriller type book. My husband often comments that he thinks I am trying to plot the perfect murder……. I asked on my Instagram if you liked the idea of me sharing books I have got through, and it seemed to be something you were interested in, so here we have it. I thought, for the first time, I would do a little round up and mini review of the books Iv read this month/six weeks Hope you enjoy!

Books Iv read recently

Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine. by Gail Honeyman

Ohh my goodness. This book spoke to my very soul. Its the story of Eleanor, a quirky, simple lady that lives her life by routine and structure. Each of her days is the same as the day before, as is every weekend when she drinks two bottles of vodka to get her through it….. This book is a tale of triumph, friendship and beautiful humanity. Unbelievable that this was the authors debut novel. It was such a distinct and learned style you would think Gail had wrote a million books.

For me, this book was a lesson in kindness, compassion and remembering that everyone is fighting their own battle. It will make you laugh, cry, and think about the way you yourself treat others. I am sure we all, try to act with kindness every day, but it really makes you think about the invisible people, the people behind closed doors. I honestly felt like I was saying goodbye to a friend when I reached the end of this book. My favourite book so far this year.

Books Iv read this month

Then She Was Gone – Lisa Jewell

This was a thriller, and it was brilliant. A fifteen year old girl, the apple of her mothers eye, disappears into thin air one day. There was no trace and no clues. After ten years, her mother, Laurel, has still not given up hope of finding her gorgeous Ellie. She knows she has to move on with her life, so when she meets a handsome stranger, knows its a sign to lay it all to rest…. I loved how this one unfolded in the last third of the book. Great story.

I loved this book. I read a lot of thrillers and if I am honest, some can be a little predictable. They follow the same ebs and flows of others in the genre. Well, this one did not disappoint me and I was hooked all the way through. Im sure any thriller/crime readers amongst you will enjoy this pretty easy read.

Books Iv read this month

The Day She Disappeared – Christobel Kent

Another thriller, (you will find a few of them in this post) Nat’s friend Beth has disappeared. Just upped and left without saying her goodbyes. Beth is a little fly by night, master of her own destiny type of girl, so no one pays much attention to her vanishing act, except Nat. She just feel that something is wrong. She feels like no one is taking her seriously or listening to her concerns. She just feels like someone is watching her, and something is wrong.

I liked this book. It took me a little while to get into it, but once I did I felt that the story was unfolding and picking up pace. The ending was a little bit of a surprise, which I quite liked, and it did make sense, which was good. I do find sometimes people throw in an ending and it can feel like an after thought. Not so with this one. it isn’t gory or particular scary, so a good one for your holidays I think.

Books Iv read tis month

The Couple Next Door – Shari Lapena

This was a number one bestseller, and I had read a few peoples Instagram posts saying how much they had enjoyed it. That could be why it didn’t blow me away? I had too much expectation on it maybe? I did enjoy it, but it felt a little predictable. I did read this straight after Then She Was Gone too, so I could have been a little harsh on it. It cant have been a Richard and Judy best seller for nothing!

The plot – An exhausted Mum and her flirty, sociable husband go to the house next door for a dinner party. Their baby sitter had let them down, so at the last minute they decide to leave their sleeping infant daughter in the house on her own, taking the baby monitor with them as a safe guard. They plan to check on her every 30 minutes too. She was sleeping when they last checked on her, but on their return home, the baby has gone. The police are suspicious of everyone, rightly or wrongly.

books Iv read this month

Close To Home – Cara Hunter

When an eight year old girl disappears (yep, another girl goes missing book) from a family party, none of the guests in the quiet suburban street saw anything, so they say… Everyone knows that nine times out of ten, when a child goes missing, its by someone they know. They just have to figure out who and police feel that time is running out.

I really enjoyed this book. It got straight into the story straight away, and hooked me in. Its important to me that a book does that. I make my mind up, fairly or unfairly, within about the first chapter, whether the book is going to float my boat or not. This one did. It had a few surprises, a few plot twists, and the ending was a good one. Another one picking up if you like a quick, entertaining read.

Well, there you have it. Is there a book that left you with a lasting impression like Eleanor did on me? Id love to know. These are my books I have read this last few weeks, and apart from Eleanor,  I seem to definitely plotting that murder this month…… Watch out! Lots of thrillers read this month. I am just starting to get some books together for my beach holiday in July. I would love any of your recommendations? It can be pretty much any genre, except anything too mushy romantic or gruesome and bloody. Let me know if you have read anything I should pick up. I am always up for a book recommendation or twelve, especially with all these trips I am planning haha!

I like a good read myself and Eleanor Oliphant is on my list! I alternate between my e-reader (which was a birthday present and is useful for taking on holiday) and an actual book. Before my recent holiday I was able to download a couple of free e-books and one I found I enjoyed very much was Love in the Elephant Tent by Kathleen Cremonesi, it’s a true story about how Kathleen left Oregan in her 20’s to travel across Europe. On a whim she joins a circus in Spain where she meets Stefano the elephant trainer who completely changes her life. It’s a story of her self discovery. I thoroughly enjoyed it so if you come across it in paperback I would recommend it.
