My European Travel Wish List – 2019 Edit

Travel, it gives you memories and turns you into a storyteller

Opening the gorgeous, ribbon tied, gold and blue box Christmas morning, these were the words that greeted me. My husband had wrote this on a little card inside the box. The thoughtful Christmas gift from him this year, was a beautiful passport holder and travel document wallet from Aspinal, (I feel so posh) and those words accompanied it.

Nik often buys me gifts related to travel. Travel is our happy place. From the day I met Nik 27 years ago we have travelled. Our very first trip was to Kent, just a few weeks after we started “going out”. The funny story with this is that I knew my Mum would disapprove of me taking off with some man I barely knew, so I had told her a story (she knows now, its ok, I wont get a telling off) about staying at Nik’s aunt’s country home, to learn to drive a combine harvester. Do not ask me why that was the details of my made up story of choice. I have no clue. I think I panicked. Maybe I thought combine harvester driving sounded wholesome and well behaved…….

Anyway, my rambling talk aside, the point is travel is what we have always done. Both together and on separate adventures. When we met we had both already been back packing round the world separately. Within 3 months of meeting, our backpacks were re-loaded and we were on a world tour. Its in our dna to seek adventure. Last year I wrote a travel destinations wish list, which for me was an emotional post to write as we never knew if we would get to any of them as Nik was fighting cancer. Thankfully, he got through that battle, and we did make it to some, so I have decided to write a wishlist for this year. Just to put it out in the universe and all that……..

european travel wish list

I have compiled two lists, (not for a post originally, just because me and Nik always have a list on the go). One is a European/short haul list, one further afield. I have utilised my much loved Lonely Planet top Ultimate Destination book to aid with this lust list. I spend hours devouring the pages of that book on a regular basis, its a beauty. For this post Im concentrating on Europe, as Nik still dosen’t have the go ahead for long haul flights yet (not long hopefully). Let me share a few of my dream destinations with you.

My European Travel Wish List

Not an unusual destination to be on a wish list, but one that I have longed to visit for may years. I long to see the winding canals and pastel coloured buildings, as well as fully immerse myself in the “cafe culture” that Italy is famous for. I am making it an aim to get there this year.

There is not a travel obsessive in the land that has not got Cappadocia hot air ballon shaped dreams in their eyes. I am obsessed with the beautiful place in Turkey. Cave hotels, soft lunar landscapes, creamy orange hues in the landscape, its just a visual, fairy tale delight. That and the open air museum of Goreme and the people living in underground dwellings, its a wish list favourite for me. I might sneak in here, that I also want to go to every single place that National Treasure Joanna Lumley went to on her silk road adventure. I was transfixed by those destinations.

Budapest, in Hungary, is said to be the most beautiful and scenic European town. Budapest was somewhere we aimed to get to last year, but never got there, so it is firmly on the top of this years list. It is a widely known fact that I am obsessed with baths. They are my go to at the end of every day. Well, Budapest has 15 thermal baths, some dating back to the 16th century, so it feels like my spiritual birth place.

I know, I know, its a cliche and very over done, but I still really want to go there! Set on the Aegean coast, this Greek beauty has black and red beaches, giving it a unique twist. Famous for its white washed buildings and stunning views, it just has to be visited at least once I think.

The town of Riga in Latvia is a new discovery for me, and a new addition to the wish list. You know how I love a building, and Riga is said to have the most amazing archetecture. A cobblestones world heritage site, it has the most spectacular river views and stunning skyline. The story book castles of Sigulda always make me want to walk around them like a princess. We are really hoping to visit Riga later this year.

I have a thing for architecture

So, there are just five of my destinations that I long to get to this year. Fingers crossed, we will cross them all off this year. Last year, we ended up throwing in a few random destinations that were not on the list into the mix. usually because we saw bargain flights that were just too good to not book!

Plans already in the diary

We do have a couple of trips already booked. I am excited that we are finally getting to Bath this month. Iv booked a gorgeous little boutique hotel that Im so excited for. Today, about 2 hours ago, I actually booked Venice for April. We are going to go for my birthday so that will be lovely! I think I may be unbearable as that approaches. Such a long standing dream. Then I am going on a Yoga and relaxation retreat in france in May. I have never done one before, so I’m not sure what to expect. Then the last thing already in the plans is Wales. Yep. Im climbing another blooming mountain! Snowdon is our mountain of choice this time, and we will be seeing it in early June! Its a little smaller than Ben Nevis, (you can read our adventure with that particular mountain in this post, Climbing Ben Nevis) so can only be a walk in the park couldnt it………

Im sure you can imagine this is just a small part of my travel wishlist. I dint want to bore you to tears with all 3011 places on it…. I would love to know of any places on your wish list. Or any places that you have been to that should be o my list? Do you have anything already in the diary? Tell me all, I love to hear about your adventures x

Lovely list. Regarding Santorini, it will be crowded in the high season. Like crowded you have never seen. Try to go in the off-season and only stay for a couple of days. Then hit a less popular island like Naxos, Paros or Milos. Then you can see what Santorini used to be like. Happy travels!

Ohhhh thank you so much for these great tips! I think it would spoil it for me if it were too crazy crowded, so I really appreciate this. I havent been to the other three you suggest either, so will be sure to investigate. Thank you! xx

      • January 2, 2019 / 9:01 pm

Even in October, Santorini is crowded. I have been to 15 Greek Islands at this point. So many to choose from. You are welcome!

I love list! I don’t care how clichéd Santorini may be, I’d still adore to go there! I went to Budapest in February 2017…wrong time of year to go as it was perishing cold! I personally think that Prague is more beautiful (but again winter doesn’t show many( places at their best and I am biased as I’m half czech 😉 ) but I loved our short trip there! Tallinn is definitely on my list, as is Lugano in Switzerland. But mainly I’d love just to go anywhere 😉 Happy New year!

Im the same, I know it will be crazy crowded, but I just want to see if it is as beautiful as its always portrayed. We visited Prague in November, and I agree, it is BEAUTIFUL! I adored it. Tallinn is somewhere that we are looking at for February, it has come so highly recommended. Ohhh I could chat travel all day long! Thank you for popping across, and thank you for even more travel on my lust list haha!

Love dreading your plans Kerry! I went to Riga last year and was so surprised with how beautiful it was and what a fab fine dining scene it has. Lots of inspo on the blog if you need it. I have the Aspiball travel wallet and passport holder too, they’re so lovely and I love the message wrote. xx

Ohhh I will pop across and have a read about Riga. It really appeals to me! Looks gorgeous and being a girl that loves her food………. The Aspinal accessories are just gorgeous! I feel so lucky to have them accompanying me on my travels xx Thank you for reading Bejal x

  4. Great list Kerry! I honestly have never heard of Cappadocia! It sounds brilliant… I’d love to go to Santorin too, I think it has to be done! We were looking to go this year but flights from Leipzig aren’t that easy – Berlin for us has more easy routes (to some great places on easyjet) but again not to Santorini so I think we’ll be doing that another time – one day she sighs haha… I’d love to go to Venice too! Can’t wait to here all about your trip there! April will be here before we know it! Enjoy lovely xx p.s gorgeous present from Nik! and what lovely handwriting he has!.

Ohhh Cappadocia is my obsession. It looks so fascinating. I must admit, we are struggling with flights to Budapest that we wanted to do in February. Only Ryanair seem to do it from London, and I refuse t fly with them since they increased all their cabin bag prices lol. Santorini always looks the dream eh! Thank you so much for reading lovely xxxx

They really have. We looked at flights earlier and it more than doubled the price b adding a cabin bag. Crazy!

I absolutely loved reading this post! I went on a world trip last year, which was absolutely life-changing, and whilst I won’t be able to travel quite as much (or far!) this year, I would love to explore the UK and/or Europe a bit more. There are so many beautiful places right on our doorstep! I look forward to reading more of your travel posts.

    Lisa xx

I was just talking to my man and we were discussing how lovely it’d be to go to Budapest and Greece too! They sound like amazing destination, especially being in the UK on this dark winter month haha. Wishing you all of this and more for 2019!

I’m not that typical traveller, I usually only want to go to my usual places in Ireland and Italy. 🙂 Simply because they are fantastic places. Now that i will live in West Cork I will have less needs to travel but of course there are other fabulous places to visit and I’d love to visit the Glendalough area or do some cliff walks to discover West Cork on foot. And of course I wish that I will be able to convince you that you want to visit West Cork too!

I think thats its a beautiful thing to love where you live, and exploring it would be amazing! We WILL get to West Cork one day, and I will be hoping you will show us round the best local pubs haha. Italy is the place I would love to spend some time exploring. I always feel like I would fall in love with it, despite having never been. I hope you are loving your new home xxxxxx

Your new passport holder is just beautiful! Travel is something very special to my partner and I, too, and often our gifts to each other revolve around that. I’m glad 2019 is looking more optimistic for you, and of course that your husband is no longer battling cancer. It’s really a devastating disease that puts everything else in your universe on hold.
We have very similar bucket lists – Cappadoccia has been on mine for years. And Venice is always a good idea!

      January 5, 2019 / 7:29 am

Hi Sarah, great minds think alike eh! Would Cappadoccia be just amazing! Cancer also has a way of making you realise what is important in life, so in a weird way, that has been a positive that has come out of it. We truly LIVE our lives to its fullest capacity. Venice, I cannot wait! I think I might cry when I first see a gondola haha! (Its been a wish for so long) I hope you get to your destinations too this year xxxx

  10. January 7, 2019 / 1:53 pm

Such a great list hun! I’d love to go to Venice and Santorini as well! x

They always look such beautiful destinations don’t they. Venice I will be able to tick off in April, so Santorini is on my hit list next haha! Thanks for reading, I hope you get to visit both too x

Santorini is on my wish list too.
We have an old school black (actually green!) board is our living room which the family fills up with travel ideas. Each time we come back from abroad, we tick the box and vote for the next one.

  12. May 16, 2019 / 7:36 am

Another great travel post. I have been to Venice, Budapest and Santorini and can they they are all amazing. Santorini is or course very different to the other two. Riga is on my list as are so many other places. We just recently came back from Stockholm which is lovely and our next trip is soon so I can’t wait.

Ohhhhh I’m so jealous. Venice is such a dream of ours. We nearly got there in April, we were all booked up, but life had other plans! Riga is high up on my list to, and Stockholm has recently gone on it. Iv been reading a lot about it and it looks beautiful. City breaks are so full on, but so good to do I think. Enjoy your next trip!
