The Best Thing About Memories, is Making Them
As well as being gifts, these experiences could just be things to look forward to after the pandemic lockdown is over! I am a huge fan of gifting people the chance to make memories, rather than “stuff”. In fact, the whole ethos of my blog is to encourage people to be making memories. Since I started my sustainable living journey, even more so! If you are on my Christmas or birthday gift list, I will pretty much guarantee that you have received an “experience” gift from me. It’s kind of my thing! Well, with Mothers Day fast approaching, I wanted to find some ideas that are about making memories. I hope to inspire you and perhaps, give you some ideas to help you add more beautiful files to the memory bank. I’m not completely selfless though……I have a voucher myself, so I am looking for options for me also…let me know your thoughts on the experience I have chosen to use my voucher on…
I am covering all budgets, and various areas, so read on, let me inspire you with the good stuff! There is also a section for more unusual experience days if you would like to be a little more inventive. Ohhhh, and if my sons are reading….Mummy loves you and any of the following are worth remembering…ahem…..Enjoy!
Ad – If you have read my blog for a while, you would know I am a longstanding fan of Buy a Gift and Red Letter Days. I am therefore thrilled that this post is in collaboration with them. It also may contain affiliate links.
Making memories – The Best Gift Ever
I spend a lot of time with my Mum. She is my Afternoon tea buddy, and sometimes spa break buddy. I am lucky to have such a great relationship with her. Along with Nik, she is my best friend. I think, giving someone the gift of your time, is one of the best things you can give anyone! Making memories with your loved one, that is what life is all about isn’t it. So, although I have given these ideas for Mothers Day, an experience shared with someone you love is always a good idea. Most of us have more than enough “stuff” right? Why not get out there and try something new! You never know, wing walking or bungee jumping could be your new hobby….
Gift of Memories – up to £50
Afternoon Tea – I am going to start with a classic. Afternoon tea. Always a winner because, come on now, its cake! There are a couple that caught my eye, but my under £50 one has to be the Chocolate Themed Afternoon Tea at Park Grand Hotel. This tea is actually award winning. That, along with the very fact is has the word chocolate in it means that no further explanation is required… Chocolate Lovers Tea – £49
I also have to give a mention to The Melody restaurant Afternoon Tea. Nik and I were gifted this by our eldest sons girlfriend last year, (read about it here) and we loved it! The Hotel has such a wonderful history to it. I have seen that there is a special offer on it at the moment too! – The Melody Afternoon Tea for two £39
Top Tip – You can also get a Smart Box for Afternoon Tea. This box allows you to choose where you would like to go for tea, in a plethora of locations! Great value at £34.99 for two people.
Vintage Steam Train – Over to Essex now, and this one gives me all the feels of The Railway Children. Set in the beautiful countryside of Epping, you will first enjoy a short trip on a vintage bus. Then, all aboard the vintage steam train to take you into Ongar village for a little quintessentially English shopping! – Vintage travel Tour – £30
Brighton Pavilion – If you fancy a little jaunt, or staycation to Brighton, this pick is ideal. Enjoy a tour of Brighton Pavilion, plus a traditional cream tea for two people. I love iconic Brighton Pavilion so its a yes from me! – Brighton Pier Tour + Tea – £44
Kew Gardens – I have never been to Kew Gardens! I am not sure how that has happened, but for some reason, I have just never got there. Well, Buy A Gift do a Kew Gardens plus Kew Palace entrance for two for £36. Or, if you fancy a family day out, they do the same for two adults and two children for £48. – Couple ticket or Family ticket
The Gherkin – My final suggestion in this section is something I have already done. You can read about it here, Drinks with a View. Cocktails in Searcy’s at The Gherkin. The famous London landmark. Oh my goodness the views of London from up there are something else! Why not treat Mum to drinks with a view, perhaps as a pre-shopping or theatre treat? It is a lovely experience and I fully recommend. – Cocktails fro two at The Gherkin £36
Gift of Memories – Up to £100
Culinary Skills – If you have a foodie that you buy for, then how about a fancy cookery class? With over 60 class types to choose from, and 53 locations, the choice is yours what you learn. Sushi making, artistry chocolate making, Indian cookery, the choice is yours. – Cookery lesson for one £59
Affordable Mini Break – How about escaping for a couple of nights with your Mum? I did this with my Mum last year. We had a spa break together that I bought her from Buy a Gift, and it was amazing. There are some fabulous offers on the two night breaks at the moment. A two night break at a choice of 154 locations is on a two for one offer. – Two night break £99
Yoga Retreat – For something a little more serene and grounding, how about getting your zen on? You know I am a fan of any kind of day retreat, or residential retreat for that matter! I found this amazing value day in Kent, that I think would be a lovely experience for Mum’s. A one day yoga retreat, plus lunch. It is for two people, and suitable for any level of Yogi. – Yoga retreat day for two £99
Themed Afternoon Tea – I am taking you back to cake now….. A really special afternoon tea that I have got my eyes on. It is a themed afternoon tea, which are my favourite kinds of high tea! The Queen of hearts is your theme for this beautiful looking tea at the absolutely stunning Taj 51 Hotel in London. Seriously, this hotel is beautiful, with the right amount of quirk and class! – Queen of Hearts Tea for Two £90
Unusual Experience Days
Ok. We have eaten all the cake, held downward dog pose and had a sleepover in a fabulous hotel. How about we look at things a little different? Go a little off piste with some options? Read on my lovelies, read on….
Vineyard Tour and Tasting with Lunch for two. – Yep, we have a wine and food option. You can choose from 12 locations to go and brush up on your wine knowledge. I actually did a tour of a vineyard here in Essex, and it was brilliant! It made me appreciative of the Essex climate too as that is how we get some of our award winning (I know, blatant Essex brag) wine. I think this would make a wonderful day out with your Mum – £49 for two
Battle Proms Classical Concert for two. – Four beautiful locations to choose from for this little Summer soiree. Pack up a picnic, grab the Prosecco and head into the park. This wonderful event has traditional cavalry displays, parachute displays and fireworks. The classical concert will be accompanied by an arial display from a Grace Spitfire. A different, but fabulous way to spend some quality time with your Mum this summer. – £66 for two
Twelve Dish Sharing Menu and Bubbles – Let’s pop back to London now, to one of my favourite areas, Camden. In my younger days, this was my stomping ground so I have a soft spot for Camden. However, it did not have Igloo’s then! Camden has beautiful, fairy light lit dining domes now, serving pan-Asian cuisine. Twelve dishes will be served for you to share, accompanied by a chilled glass of fizz. An experience as well as a meal, Perfect! – £69 for two
Design your own perfume – A lot of people have their signature scent that they always wear don’t they (mine is Penhalligans if you are asking). A scent that is your go to, and people recognise as you. But how lovely would it be to totally create your own, exclusive scent! Learn how to blend, recognise and understand how scent mixes and works. You will then create your own fragrance to take home. There are 21 locations offering this experience, up and down the UK – £118 for two or £168 including Afternoon tea
Sunrise Hot Air Balloon Ride – If you have been with me a little while in these parts, you would know my love of a sunrise. Nik and I have spent 29 years seeking a sunrise! Well, this experience would be the dream for anyone that, like me, enjoys the beauty of nature. Just imagine. The quietness of drifting along in the early dawn, waiting for the sunrise to burst into colour and paint everywhere burnished orange. What a privilage to witness. This is the most expensive of my picks for you, but perhaps you have siblings to chip in??? A very generous gift, but my goodness, what a treat. Available in 28 locations – £124 for one or £248 for two.
Murder Mystery Overnighter – I think in another life, I was 100% a Nancy Drew/Miss Marple type character. My inner sleuth loves to try to solve a mystery. I know there are many like me. We are single handedly solving all the crimes from our armchairs. Well, with this gift experience, you can get involved. Stay at one of 17 locations, and be part of your very own who done it. Your stay will start with an Afternoon tea for you both, and will also include dinner. It is over dinner that the murderous plot will be slowly unveiled and unravelled….. (Im sure it was Mr Lloyd with the candlestick in the drawing room…if there was a Mr Lloyd…or a candlestick) – £208 for two
My current choice for Making Memories
I hope I have given you a little inspiration of what is available from Red Letter Days and BuyaGift. Have a little browse. Obviously, I have just touched the surface! There is a whole plethora of wonderful ways available to gift an experience that will be making more memories with your Mum or loved ones. As you can see, I have already enjoyed a few myself. I think I am slowly making my way through the list…
But, on this occasion I have chosen to use my gift voucher on getting my fancy pants on. I decided on this experience as, like many of you that read my blog, it is nice to step into the shoes of the fancy people occasionally! I have chosen the Harrods Terrace Champagne for two. My experience involves heading into the icon of London itself, Harrods. There, I will get to experience chilled champagne served in crystal glasses. This will be served in the beautiful, light flooded Perrier-Jouet Champagne Terrace. Accompanying my bubbles will be an individually prepared food platter to share with my plus one. Of course, I will report back on it after I have been..
What do you think? Did I make a good choice? I thought it was a little different, and it is a new experience to be added to Red Letter Day’s books. I thought it would be a nice way to take a little time out if I am in London shopping or exploring. Let me know what you would have chosen. I would love to know what experience you would choose out of the selection I have give you too! Tell me all….I will pass the hint on to your children/partner/dog. xx
