Fancy an Eco Retreat? Luxury Glamping in the Uk

Ok. I have already shared with you 7 eco hotels here in the UK. Now we are moving up a gear. Going a little more off grid. Now it is getting out in nature and channelling our inner Bear Grylls….Ok, maybe the non hunting, plant eating, vegan Bear Grylls but you get the picture. We are going to be exploring some of the best luxury glamping in the UK. I am excited. I love being out in nature so I think I have picked some good ones! Some of these are also back taking bookings with zero risk to your cash, if we are still restricted by Covid 19. You ready? Let’s glamp…….(is that even a word)…

Luxury Glamping in the UK

I have a confession. I love the smell of tents and caravans. There. I said it. They have that unmistakable smell don’t they. I can’t pretend the smell is entirely pleasant, but it is distinct. Maybe a hint of damp, mixed with mud and “outdoors”? It just transports me back to happy summer’s of my childhood, spent on holiday camps. Me and my brother playing the penny drop machines in the arcade. Meeting other kids that you were of course going to stay in touch and write to forever and ever and ever. Playing board games in the awning of our bright orange tent, while the rain lashed down. My Mum frantically moving everything off the floor so it didn’t get damp. Her rousing call (in an ever hopeful and rising in pitch voice), “oh its just a shower, it will pass”. There was always a friendliness and camaraderie on a camp site. Ahhhh. Happy days!

Of course, if you are that way inclined, you can still go “under canvas” in the traditional sense. There are still many places you can take your “house in a bag”, (let’s face it, that is what the aim is here), and pitch a tent. Notice I say YOU can still do that? While I have camped many, many times since childhood, given the choice, I prefer a little more lux in my mini break these days. My days of camping on the sides of mountains in a tent no larger than a dog kennel, are done. I want a bit more glamp, in my camp now.

Enter stage left, the marriage of glamour and camping…..glamping! While glamping itself is not a new kid on the block, eco glamping is a little bit of a newer addition. There has been a huge increase in people looking for ways to travel more sustainably, so I love that we have this emergence. If we can immerse ourselves in nature at the same time, double win! So, further to my own first glamping experience, I have explored, and found some more amazing luxury glamping in the UK.

Family Glamping

These suggestions are all suitable for, but not exclusive for, families

Originally, glamping was thought of as more of a couples or girls weekend kind of thing. As the popularity has grown, family glamping sites have also emerged. A little different to my orange tent that smelt of damp…..

Loveland Farm – Devon

Address – Loveland Farm, Hartland, Devon EX39 6AT

There are a couple of accommodation choices at Loveland Farm. Either Pods or Tipi’s. Both are perfect for a family luxury glamping UK experience. There are also 6 camping pitches on the land. Sustainability is at the heart of Loveland farm ethos. Every decision that has been made developing the farm, has been with a “green future” in mind. Solar panels, composting toilets, (no water or electricity needed) and growing the food at the farm are just some of the many ways they are reducing their impact. You can read more about their efforts here.

Situated near the North Devon coastline, with sea views, the position is perfect. The pods sleep between 2 and 7, and the tipis sleep 2-4. I very much have my eye on a stay in the Loveland or Hartland Pod…..

To Note – The Loveland Farm has a 2 night minimum policy, three nights in peak season. Some of the pods are dog friendly.

Eco-Escape Campsite, Pembrokeshire

Address – Lane next to James Findlay Electrical Yard , B4325, Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire, SA73 1DN

Absolutely love this at Eco-Escape

Beautiful, luxurious bell tents are your accommodation of choice for family glamping at Eco Escape. There are woodland cabins that will shortly be available as an alternative. Having as little impact on the planet as possible is paramount to their ethos. There is no electricity, but do not think that means no power! Wind turbines, and solar panels are the energy here. As well as that huge plus, hand made furniture from reclaimed wood and growing their own food are all helping keep their impact low. They even have a wood fired hot tub that guests can book time slots for! They have a “plant a tree” policy for every camping party, inline with their Greener Camping Club accreditation. Set at the edge of an ancient oak woodland, and a tidal inlet, the surrounding area is stunning!

You can see prices and availability just here

To note – The bell tents sleep between 2 and 6 people. There is also an option to hire the entire site, (for 26 people), from £584 per night.

Round The Woods – Norfolk

Address – Fairfield House, Morton Lane, Weston Longville, Norfolk, NR9 5JL

Privacy assured at Round The Woods

This exclusive little site is surrounded by the Norfolk countryside. It is a bit more off grid and back to nature. The emphasise here is to immerse and relax in nature. Children have room to play and will love this family glamping site. Situated in an 18 acre nature reserve, the Yurt accommodations are set far apart ensuring privacy and peace. The accomodation is powered by solar panels, and the toilets are eco friendly compostable toilets. Round the woods are passionate about you having a “holiday with a clean conscious” so there are the perfect eco retreat.

To note – All of the Yurts here have a skylight in the top of them. This means you get a beautiful view of the night sky, with no light pollution, from your bed!

Romantic Glamping uk

These are ideal for couples, or for those looking for a more peaceful, get away from it all retreat. Some of these provide glamping with hot tubs! All make for the perfect romantic glamping uk experience.

Campwell – Gloucestershire

Address – Campwell ,Cherry Wood, Oakford Lane, Marshfield, Gloucestershire, SN14 8FE

How gorgeous is the Roundhouse at Campwell

The aim of Campwell is to remind guests about more simple and natural lives. There is the choice of beautiful yurts, shepherds hut and log cabins. I have my eye on a stay in the Chiefs Den. Three yurts all joined, with living space, 2 bedrooms and kitchen. It looks amazing! A stay in the “village” at Campwell would also be memorable. The log cabins are set in the trees, making them look like they have always belonged there. Staying in the village means you share a shower block and composting toilets. Off grid, low impact, hidden village in a woodland valley. A real eco retreat. However, the gorgeous city of Bath is not far away if you fancy a little city life too. I love the look of this place so much!

To note – Although most of the accommodation here is for 2 people, Campwell has a roundhouse pod that is perfect for larger groups. You can also hire the entire village site

Gowan Bank Farm – Lake District

Gowan Bank Farm has a beautiful shepherds hut, perfect for a romantic glamping getaway. Made from reclaimed wood, and insulated using sheep’s wool from the resident flock. Situated on the edge of the farm, right by a beautiful stream. The hut has a full kitchen, bathroom and large bed. The surrounding area has plenty to immerse yourself in. In fact, just 3 miles away, is Lake Windemere. This really is a get away from it all little eco retreat.

To note – Gowan Bank farm is a working farm. There are cows sheep and chickens on the land nearby.

Langley Dam – Northumberland

Address – Langley-on-Tyne NE47 5LD

Beautiful Langley Dam

Ohhh I adore the look of this place. The Glamping cabins, are all built from sustainable wood, to resemble upturned fishing boats! All cabins are spacious and can sleep up to 4 people. The site has a growing sustainable ethos. They have started with it being powered by Green energy supplier, all cleaning is eco friendly and they have a huge recycling project.

You can see prices and availability just here

To note – If you arrive at Langley Dam by foot, bike or public transport, you will receive a free upgrade.

Glamping pods with hot tubs

I am a sucker for a hot tub when I am away. I am a massive fan of baths, but I know they use way too much water to be environmentally friendly. I try to limit the baths I have at home, so a glamping site with a hot tub is heaven for me! The fact that these are heated in a low impact way, means I can indulge with a clear conscience. Pass me the champers!

Eco Retreats – Powys, Wales

Address – Dyfi Valley Forest Retreat, Graiglanddu, Melinbyrhedyn, Machynlleth SY20 9HA

Eco Retreats outdoor bath

Wow. This is my dream stay. All of the accommodation is traditional yurts, and all have outdoor wood fired baths. Situated on an organic farm, this off grid forest retreat is something special. Waterfall yurt, has a cascading waterfall behind it. Another, River Yurt, is set right on the river. You can be in your outdoor bath, gazing at the gently flowing river. Perfect! Eco retreats are passionate about sustainability. They are passionate that the work they do with the yurts, does not impact the beautiful forest they are located in. All products, services and suppliers are organic, fair trade and eco friendly wherever possible. I ADORE the look and sound of this place.

You can see booking and prices just here

To note – The Yurts, of which there are 5, have eco toilets, and no electricity! Your night time light is candle lit lanterns. A beautiful romantic glamping experience

Secret Cloud House Holidays – Staffordshire

Address – Limestone View Farm, Stoney Lane, Cauldon, Staffs, ST10 3EP

Photo courtesy of Secret Cloud Holidays

I think I have found the ultimate in luxury glamping UK for you here. This place looks BEAUTIFUL! With woodfired hot tubs, an eco toilet and wood burning stove oven, they are keeping their environmental impact low. Sleeping between 2 and 5 people, these yurts offer a private, luxury, eco retreat experience. If the beauty and tranquility of the area wasn’t enough, they have a gorgeous treatment room. The location of the yurts mean that they have views over the Staffordshire moorlands, as well as the rolling hills of the Peak District beyond. A little slice of heaven.

You can see booking and prices just here

To note – To book any treatments at Secret Cloud, you would need to enquire in advance. With full body massages starting at £45, I think they would be a wonderful little extra while there.

So, what luxury glamping UK site do you fancy?

Ok, that is my selection of luxury glamping UK sites. What one is your favourite? I think if I was given the opportunity, I would do 3 nights in each! Unreasonable? Greedy? Yes, probably but they would all make such an amazing eco retreat wouldn’t they.

Have you experienced the joy of glamping yet? Do you like the idea of a more eco friendly glamping site? Is luxury glamping in the UK more of an appeal than traditional camping? As ever, I would love to know your thoughts.

I’m gutted that our railway carriage stay in Norfolk was cancelled due to COVID-19 but fingers crossed we can rebook for my birthday weekend later in the year! We stayed at Hesleyside Huts in 2018, in a gorgeous shepherds hut in Northumberland which is highly recommended. Our only requirement is a private (preferably en-suite) loo 🙂

Ohhh I fancy a shepherds hut. I also coincidently, really fancy Northumberland. I have an urge to go to Lindisfarne Island. I have a slight obsession with any viking history, so really fancy visiting. We WILL all get to travel again, and it will be even more amazing

Northumberland is beautiful – although it’s quite a mission from you I guess! There’s a couple of posts on my blog about our two stays, but the shepherds hut was definitely my favourite! Haven’t made it over to Lindisfarne yet, the timing has never been right!

We’ve just rebooked the railway carriage for my birthday weekend in September – baby steps but UK travel will definitely be the way to go this year x

        • May 17, 2020 / 8:23 pm

Ohhh I will pop across for a read. It is a fair trek for us, but if we are staying a few days, we don’t mind the travel. Ah I am so glad you rebooked. It is something nice to look forward to isn’t it x
