Well hi there. Welcome to the post where I talk about arm pits….. I know, I know, you’re excited right??… I have talked to you about sustainable periods, why not sustainable BO control as a follow up….No topic off limits with me when it comes to planet saving! Anyway…..I think I have probably been looking for an eco friendly deodorant for almost 18 months. I have tried a lot. Some I loved, others I may as well of been ripping up my cash and scattering the parts to the wind. However, I think I have found the one. My ideal. My box ticker. My lobster. Enter stage left…Wild deodorant. The refill deodorant that has become my staple. In this months sustainable living post, let me spill all of the tea on this bad boy.
Wild Deodorant Review
So, before I get into the meat of the review, I thought I’d address a few of the Why’s. A little background on why making the switch from chemical to natural deodorants should be considered. If you are like me, you are more motivated to make changes when you understand why they should be made. Hopefully, I can help you out with that! Oh and sit tight, at the end of this post I have a 20% off code for you should you wish to give them a go yourself. I know it can get costly trying to find fab products x.
(not an ad or sponsored post by the way, I purchased this myself, from my own hard earnt dosh. They just kindly sent me a code to share with friends)
Why do we need eco friendly deodorants?
Many of us are thankfully looking for more sustainable choices when it comes to our lifestyle. We are waking up to the fact that we simply cannot carry on as we are. The climate crisis is very real, and we need to make change NOW. In addition to the negative effect traditional deodorants can have on the planet, some of the ingredients in them are rumoured to not the best for our health either!
I also appreciate that it can be overwhelming, expensive and difficult to find things that work as effectively as products we are used to. I get it. In my post Zero Waste – easy Tips that Help, I gave you a few suggestions that I hope make it feel easier to start switching. One of the tips was to change one item at a time. As the product you use runs out, replace it with an eco friendly alternative. It is far less daunting.
You can read about my zero waste pamper if you need more help or inspiration.
I know that is easier said than done! We have to sometimes, kiss a lot of frogs to find our match right?? Same is true for eco friendly alternatives to our beloved fave products. Well, I hope I can take the work out of the deodorant one for you. My Wild deodorant review could help you out a little, help you avoid the PIT-falls (see what I did there….literally a comic genius)!
Wild Deodorant for our health
We all sweat. It is as natural as breathing, and very necessary. It is how our body regulates our temperature and cools us down. It is an important function of our body. But let’s face it, no one want to feel clammy, sticky and smelly! We need a little weapon in our arsenal to stop us being avoided in public….
Wild deodorant is a “natural” deodorant. But never fear, it isn’t puffing your arm pits with cornflour. We have come a long way from those days… Natural deodorants simply formulate their product with ingredients derived from nature. No sulphates, parabens or synthetic chemicals at all. Traditional, chemical sprays are antiperspirants, which have aluminium salts in them. These work by plugging the sweat pores, preventing the sweat leaking out.
There has been countless studies done on aluminium in products. There has even been some links apparently found to some health problems. Now, I am also aware that there has also been reports debunking this research. But I am a simple thinking creature and my opinion is why take the chance! If there is the slightest risk of it being harmful, I will pass thank you very much. Clean ingredient, safer products are what we should aim for.
Wild deodorant for the planet
Climate change is very real, so we need to live more consciously right? I will hedge my bets here and say that many of us grab our deodorant when we do our weekly shop right? It is easy and convenient. But, when you think of the deodorant shelves in the supermarket, they are pretty much, all plastic, (roll on and solid versions) or canned (traditional aerosol). All of these options will often state that they are recyclable. But the reality is that they are notoriously difficult to recycle.
The plastic ones are often made of a combination of different types of plastic, meaning they are rarely recycled as the cost to do so is high. The canned versions have to be totally clean, dry and empty to be able to be recycled. Something that is hard to achieve. Plus, the compressed gasses in them have a harmful impact on CO2 emissions. With the UK alone estimated to use 600 million aerosols per year, you can see the problem! It is a bit of a sticky wicket!
Wild refill deodorant solution
So, let us look at how Wild refill deodorant addresses those problems. Firstly, our health. Wild refill deodorant is not an antiperspirant. It does not use aluminium salts to cause that temporary block in the sweat pores. Instead, it wicks away moisture using tapioca starch, which absorbs any moisture and keeps you dry. It does not use any chemical or synthetic fragrance either. Essential oils are used to give the product the delicious scent range that they offer. There is absolutely no parabens, sulphates, chemical nasties or aluminium. You can see a full list of ingredients here.
Then you have the way they help the planet. Their system is simple, yet brilliant! You firstly have a reusable case made from aluminium and recycled plastic. The robust, sturdy case is designed to be used again and again, eliminating single use plastic or waste. It is fantastic for travel too. You simply insert the product refill into the case each time you run out. The cases come on four colours, Aqua, Coral, Purple and Silver.
Next, you choose your refills. The refills come in 100% home compostable packaging, making it the first totally plastic free refill. The refill cartridges are made from bamboo pulp, which can go straight in your paper/card recycling or compost bin when empty. I have actually seen people using the empty containers to grow seedlings in too! The fragrances available are all beautiful. Not overpowering, but fresh and pit perfect! You can choose from Orange Zest, Coconut Dreams, Bergamot Rituals, Rose Blush and Mint Fresh. I am currently using Orange Zest and love it.
Wild deodorant also gives back, and you know I love a business that gives back! For every sale of deodorant, Wild makes a contribution to the climate charity, “On a Mission“. The charity works on reforestation projects and carbon offsetting. Wild deodorant have their own mission –
My Wild Deodorant Review
Now we have all of the finer details out of the way, let me tell you abut my experience with it. Like I say, I have tried a lot of natural, sustainable deodorants. I absolutely loved a couple of them, but found that they ran out so quickly! I was literally having to buy another 3 weeks in. Not particularly cost effective! This was part of the reason why I wanted to wait a while before I posted this review. I knew I loved it within a couple of weeks. But, I wanted to see what mileage these little cartridges of loveliness had in the tank!
Well, it has been 5 weeks since I started using it, and I am still on my first refill. So, I am happy with that! My previous fave natural deodorant was lasting 4 weeks max, and was more expensive. Its a win on that front from me!
Just as a side note – the guideline that Wild deodorant give is approximately 4 weeks per cartridge. I think I am going to get around 6 weeks.
Some questions you may ask about Wild refill deodorant;
Does it work? – My answer is a resounding yes. I think it works brilliantly! I have not once felt uncomfortable or self conscious. Bare in mind, I was first trialling this when we had the heat wave here in the UK! It stood up to the mission with no problem. Trust me, I sniffed my arm pits goooddd so I could give an informed opinion. Oh and yes, members of my family also had the job of a quick pit sniff…..
Is there a “transition” period? – If you have been looking into natural deodorants, you may have heard this term. Some people experience a little time frame of excessive sweating, known as the transition period. This is where your body is switching from an antiperspirant (that keeps sweat in), to a deodorant. It can last up to around 2 weeks. I personally did not experience this. I have used a natural deodorant on an off for about 2 years now though, so maybe it was because of that. Not everyone gets this transition period though, so maybe I was just one of those people.
Is is cruelty free? – Errrrr, is the Earth round?? Yep, it is cruelty free, vegan, and neither ingredients or finished product are tested on animals.
Is it easy to apply? – I know some of the natural deodorants I have tried have had a dragging feeling when I applied them. They were fairly solid and felt like I had to melt them a little so that I did not feel like I was tearing my arm pit off! Wild refill deodorant is not like that at all. It glides on like butter! I use about 3-4 swipes under each arm. It applies like a dream.
The Discovery Pack
How much does it cost? – There are a few options when it comes to getting started with Wild deodorant. There are one off purchases, as well as a handy subscription service! These are as follows
- I started with the Discovery Pack, (as above), so I could see how I got on with it. This is a case, and three refills of whatever scents you choose. It cost £25
- Starter pack – This is one case and one refill, and is part of the subscription service. It costs £12
- You then get sent a pack of 3 refills a month after your initial purchase. You can then adjust the time that you get sent refills in line with how long they are lasting for you. You pay £15 with free postage for your 3 refills. Subscription can be cancelled at any time
- Refill packs – If you have opted to not be part of the subscription, you can just buy refills as and when. They are £18 + postage for non subscribers.
You can see the full details of pricing etc just here. But, as promised, I do have a 20% code for you right here. Just for full disclosure – if you use this link, you get 20% off, and so do I on my next purchase.
My Wild refill deodorant review conclusion
I could not love it more. That is the long and the short of it. I feel I have finally found the sustainable, natural deodorant that I have been looking for. It works, it doesn’t irritate my skin (even after shaving) and it is more cost effective than many I have tried. I love the compaines ethos too. I am always happier to give my cash to a comapny that is sustainable in every sense of the word. After all, the absolute definition of sustainability is;
Sustainability focuses on meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. The concept of sustainability is composed of three pillars: economic, environmental, and social—also known informally as profits, planet, and people.kerry hawkins
