Discovering Kiehl’s helped me get over my brand blinkers

June 15, 2017

I have an admission. I need to just get it out there. Im a skincare brand snob.

There. I said it.

I have always looked after my skin well, and for the last 18 years or so have only used cosmeceutical brands on my skin, as I want results, and will not go down the injectables route. I need products packed with active ingredients. I need them I tell ya! I still believe that this is the right day to day course of action for results but I have dropped my snobbery a little since discovering the brand Kiehl’s.

I loved everything that I read about this brand, and their whole ethos and approach spoke to my soul. When I discovered that my local Debenhams had a small Kiehl’s concession, I decided to go and have a chat with them and see what they are all about. Firstly, I absolutely blooming loved that I was not pounced on when I walked in. I. Hate. That. There is nothing more off putting than being launched at when you walk up to a counter, and I cannot tell you the amount of times that I have walked away from somewhere because of the pushy staff, no matter how much I may want their product.

I was left to browse, and then when I was ready, looked up and caught the assistant’s eye, (who was named Paul and the nicest man ever), and he came over and helped me. I need to also add here that I was blown away by how passionate, knowledgable and helpful Paul was. His product knowledge was fantastic and he steered and guided me without one ounce of “selling” at all. Such a pleasant shopping experience and introduction to the brand. So refreshing.

Anyway, I digress. I was after trying a masque mainly, that I aimed to use once a week or so to give my skin a boost. Paul, my new bbf, recommended the Turmeric & Cranberry Seed Energising Radiance Masque, (I know, long title right?). It claimed to brighten and energise the look of dull, fatigued skin. Yep Paul, hit me with it, give me that in bucket loads!

I have been using the masque once a week for about 4 weeks now, and Im seriously impressed. The application is easy, you put a thin but visible layer (think Princess Fiona from Shreck, thats your desired look here) over your skin, and leave on for about 10 minutes. (I could leave you a photo of me wearing the look, but if you follow my Instagram stories, you would have seen me in this masque many times). Then, using warm water you start removing, massaging in circular movements as you do. Now, I will add here that it is a bit messy to remove. It likes to stay put. I have found the best way, is to get the masque moving with the warm water, massage all over for a few minutes, then I use damp cotton wool to remove the rest. Ta-daaaa, off in no time.

My skin instantly feels softer, and looks brighter, but the main thing that I have noticed and love, is that for a few days after, my skin has really good skin days! I don’t have to wear any foundation or skin make up at all for a few days. That is the honest truth, no skin make up at all! I can literally moisturise, spf, and go. My skin seems to have a radiance and clarity that just looks heathy and glowing. I love it! Even my 15 year old son told me my skin has been looking “fresh”, which Im assured is good in teen-talk. If its a warm day, I dust a tiny bit of loose mineral powder over my forehead and chin to help with shine, but thats it.

I have, if the truth be told, been surprised by how impressed I am with this masque. I didn’t expect to be. I havent used an over the counter, cosmetic masque in forever, but the way my skin looks after using it speaks for itself. It has earnt its place as a staple in my skincare routine. Well done little red pot of wonder, well done.

Other products caught my eye and I did also buy the Kiehl’s honey whipped body butter, (you can read about that more here), which is amazing, and Paul gave me a bag of samples, including other skincare and body bits, ย to try. I have also been invited in for a facial, play with the products and chat about the Kiehl’s products and more knowledge about the company itself, so look forward to that.

If you haven’t tried this masque, and you feel like your skin needs a little pick me up, this brand snob right here has had to take a seat and admit that she can be impressed still, so I would recommend it fully.

Id love to hear of any other products you think I should try from the brand. Or any other brands that have impressed you and you can recommend. Let me know.

Hi Julie, thanks for stopping by x. Yes you should try it, it makes a real difference. Oh I will look out for the pore lifting and tightening serum, that sounds a good one too.

  3. I still need to try something from Kiehl’s but I really want to. Unfortunately as a student they are still pretty expensive for me. xx

    • kerrylifeandloves says:

Oh goodness, I totally agree. Student finances dont always extend to this sort of expense, I remember it well! Kiehls do offer great size samples, so it may be worth popping by there and asking for one to try xxx

  4. I want to be a skincare snob but my funds don’t allow it ๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ˜€. Slowly but surely I’m trying to work my way up the ladder. I’m at Liz Earle and Superfacialist status at the mo!

    • kerrylifeandloves says:

Hahaha! Unfortunately my job made me that way, I know too much! I do love Liz Earle, and use their cleanser all the time. I think companies like The Ordinary do amazing skincare, with a fabulous stable of ingredients, at fantastic prices, so would recommend looking into them xx. Thanks for stopping by xx

    • kerrylifeandloves says:

You are more than welcome! I am very new to Kiehls, so am only just discovering what they have to offer. This was, for me, a fantastic introduction to the brand xx I love the idea of mixing up home made masques though, they are some of the best ones! Thanks for reading xx

      • Mrs.S LDN says:

Completely agree, i try and mix up one every now and again to see what there like. I always feel like a mad scientist and I love it hahahah xxx

        • kerrylifeandloves says:

Ohh no I havent, but am honesty, always on the look out for good handcream. In my job I wash my hands a gazillion times a day, so my hands dry out like a prune! I will have a look at that one, thank you x Oh, and nothing wrong with being a mad scientist hahaha

          • Mrs.S LDN says:

Wow that sounds different, what do you do? Found any good ones? xx

          • kerrylifeandloves says:

I actually work as a skin specialist! I do results driven, machine based facials mainly. I had a skincare salon that I “retired” from in January. I love masques made with rose water, clay or glycerin. It takes me back to my college days of mixing up masques x

          • Mrs.S LDN says:

Oh wow that sounds so cool!! Thats so impressive!! How did you get into that?
Rose water is a fave of mine with my red checks ๐Ÿ™‚ xx

I trained as a beauty therapist back in 2000, but very quickly found my passion was skin. I focused on that and took as many courses as I could, worked and trained with as many brands as I could, before I launched my skin salon in 2010. I was just a skin geek, and loved helping people get their skin the best it could be. teenage skins especially as it can destroy a kids confidence if their skin is bad. I semi-retired this year, i wanted to take life a little slower!

This mask sounds amazing! I am still yet to try Kiehl’s products, but I’ve been looking for new skincare products lately, so maybe now is the time to try it!

    • kerrylifeandloves says:

Hi Kat, thanks for stopping by xx. I am surprised that I had only just discovered them to be fair. I always thought they were overpriced for what they was, but I am sold! The midnight recovery oil is amazing too! I could probably spend a small fortune there, (thats why I only visit occasionally lol)

  7. Oh my goodness Kerry you have completely sold me on this mask, it sounds like it’s just what I need and its going straight to the top of my to buy list!
I’m a huge fan of Kiehl’s products myself, I only discovered them a few months ago and have been hooked since so I’m not surprised this mask is good! I’ll definitely be picking up a pot
I also agree with you completely about Kiehl’s staff, they’re the friendliest most lovely people! My Kiehl’s guy in Belfast actually follows me on Instagram! Hehe they’re so lovely and friendly and just make you want to try products without being pushy!

Ohhh Yayyy! Glad to help. Im sure you will love it. I love that you can tell the staff have a passion and love of the company that they work for, its rare! I have the new Creme de Corps range on my hit list for next time I go. I have the whipped body butter, which is divine, and they now do a foaming body cleanser in the range. Yum!

  8. I like a good mask so will check to see if we have this product – haven’t heard of it.
