Spend or Save – High End Make Up Versus High Street Version

Hi, Im Kerry and Im a make up addict……

Its no secret that I have an ever growing stash of make up. I have enjoyed applying make up to my face since I was about 13. My weakness tends to be eyeshadow palettes and lipsticks, but, in all honesty, I can pretty much convince myself of any make up purchase. I do tend to sway towards higher end make up, but, along the way over the years, I have found some amazing equivalents to some of my favourites. I thought I would share a few with you, so you could decide to spend and push the boat out, or save with its drugstore sista!.

Spend – Charlotte Tilbury Contour Wand £29

You know that I love anything from the Charlotte Tilbury brand right? This product is no exception and its great. It makes contouring easy as its so precise and blendable. I did write a full review on it in this post, Charlotte Tilbury Contour Wand so you can see full details if you want to know the finer points. I love it, I use it on nights out etc, and it makes life easy for even the most novice of make up wearers.

Save – Collection Contour Stick £3.99

I picked up this bargain before my one from CT, as I had never gotten into contouring, and didnt even know if it was something that would suit this old face of mine. I thought for £3.99, it was worth a go. This crayon is great. It dosent blend as easily as the CT one, as its a more crayon like texture as opposed to the liquid of the Charlotte Tilbury one, but it does the job. If, like me, your not sure if contouring is for you, these are 100% worth looking at. They come in 5 colours, so you will find one to suit your skin tone.

Spend – Bobbi Brown Cream eyeshadow stick £23

I blooming well love these. They stay put all day, and do not crease at all. Even on my already creased skin! Again, I did a full review in this post, Bobbi Brown Longwear Cream Eyeshadow stick A Review, and my love for these little sticks is still strong. I use them often as a base for powder eyeshadow, as well as eyeshadow. They just dont budge! Big fan of them, big fan.

Save – Kiko Longlasting stick eyeshadow – £6.90

I picked these up when I did my Kiko haul, and they are fab. I do tend to use these more as a base to powder eyeshadows than on their own, as they do crease a little. They do last pretty well, and I think for the money, definatley worth a look.

Spend – Benefit Dew the Hoola Liquid bronzer £24.50

I received the small sized version of this in a goody bag from a function I went to. You can use it directly onto your skin to warm up your complexion, or mix a little into your moisturiser as a  base. Its a great product and I found it easy to use. I think I perhaps didnt fall in love with it as much as I could have, because of my loyalty and unquestionable love for the next product…..

Save – The Body Shop drops of `sun £12

I LOVE this product. It just rocks my world. I use this when my face has a little bit of colour, to warm up and slightly darken my foundation. It means I dont have to go and buy another base product as my usual ones are too light when I have a little tan. You can see a full review in this post, My secret Make up Weapon in the Warmer Months, and you will see how much I love it. I tend to mix a few drops into my foundation, or into my moisturiser if I am having a good skin day and dont require much coverage. I would recommend this product a gazillion percent. Am I making my love clear???

Spend – Clarins Instant Concealer £22 (although Iv found it on special offer for you for £13)

This concealer is amazing and I like it because it is quite light reflecting, so really brightens. It is quite thick so a little goes a really, really long way. It lasts forever! I love this under my inner corners of my eyes, as I feel it really lifts that area. Cant go wrong with this concealer and I will repurchase if it ever runs out!

Save – Maybelline Eraser Eye Concealer £7.60

I have repurchased this concealer three times now. I think it is amazing value and a great product. You do need more of it than the Clarins one, and I do get through them quite quickly, but it blooming fab. Like most products that have a sponge applicator, I dont think the applicator is great for blending it in, but its useful for applying onto the skin. I just use my foundation brush to blend. Its amazing value, I love it!

Spend – Bobbi Brown Brightening Blush (similar as no longer sold) £35

I bought this after seeing it on a Youtube tutorial by Pixiwoo, and it is a gorgeous blusher. I love the way it has the slight shimmer in it, so really illuminates the skin. It makes me look healthy, even if I am feeling as rough as a badgers! It has lasted me for ever, so cost effectiveness is fab.

Save –  Kiko Shade Fusion Trio Blush £8.90

This was an item also bought in my Kiko haul, and you can see all of the items I picked up in this post, Kiko Haul – First Impressions, if you want all the low down. I know a few people purchased this blush when I featured it as it really is a great product. Again, it has the little light reflecting properties that the BB one has, and brings a nice flush of subtle colour. I do find this one a little more soft, in that you swirl your blush brush in it and a lot of powder is formed. I think this will run down quicker than the BB one, but its still a great buy.

Spend – Mac Blankety Lipstick £17.50

I love the texture of Mac lipsticks, and until they started testing on animals again, they were my go to for a lippy. Charlotte Tilbury has taken that top spot now. Having said that, this lipstick is beautiful and I will wear it until it is all gone. The colour is a brown tinged nude, and I love it.

Save – NYX Plush Gel Lipstick £6.50

I was introduced to this brand by blogs I read! So many bloggers mentioned them, so I thought id investigate. I love the consistency of these lipsticks, although I think they are discontinuing these in favour of their lip butters – equally as nice. These feel really hydrating, and for the money, they are great value. Another win.

So, there you have it! I hope you have found this useful! The drug stores really do have some amazing products, and I dont think you always have to spend a fortune. I am always going to be a fan of higher end make up, Im not gonna lie, but I do think these items I have listed give great bang for their buck.

Do you know any good high street/high end comparison products? Any drug store make up items that you swear by? Anything you think I should try? Does anyone have a comparison to any of the Urban Decay Naked Palettes? Id love to hear of any great finds. After all, I do have an addiction to feed………

Great post and bang on with the products! Bobbi Brown is so good at nailing our skin tones and those shadow sticks are so good! I think Nars Creamy Concealer is similar to the Clarins. So I shall have to try the Clarins as I am boycotting Nars for going into China.
Will have to search out the Body Shop Drops of Sun for sure – thank you!

Im the same with Nars, and its a shame as I love so many of their products. The drops of sun are such a great product to have to hand, they go on for ever! Thank you for reading, much appreciated xx

It was weird seeing the body shop as a ‘save’ option since it’s reaaally expensive here in Norway. But I love this, I love reading about dupes and all of that. x

    • kerrylifeandloves
      March 28, 2018 / 7:32 am

Oh really? Is is thought of as an expensive brand? Isnt it weird how we all differ! Whats a brand in Norway thats pretty reasonable Lise? Thanks for reading my lovely xx

      • Lise
        March 29, 2018 / 6:04 am

We don’t have many local make up brands so the cheapest would be NYX or Wet ‘n Wild, even Rimmel. The Body Shop and Lush products are so overpriced here compared to the UK. everything is about double the price.

  7. March 28, 2018 / 8:09 am

I never tried anything from Kiko but they always have gorgeous products. I like their packing and over all style, I hope I’ll get something from them soon. xx

  8. March 28, 2018 / 8:21 am

Your makeup collection is so beautiful ! 🌟 I am guilty of liking high end products too, I always have a usable chanel lipstick that I can afford by saving money 😅 I know the lipsticks from nars are as good as the ones from dior, but they’re almost as expensive so I’m not sure if it’s worth it !

    • kerrylifeandloves
      March 28, 2018 / 8:29 am

Ah thank you, make up is definately one of my weaknesses! I think there is something very special about having a chanel lipstick though isnt there. I only have one, and I always feel so fancy when I wear it haha. I agree, I think unless the saving is a good one, I would rather by the higher end version. Thank you so much for reading xx

      March 28, 2018 / 10:29 pm

Ohhhhh sorry (not sorry) haha. They are fab, and for me, I love the easiness and speed of them. The Bobbi Brown one they do in a double ended version too, so you can create a smokey eye as its dark one end and lighter the other. So quick and easy. Thanks for reading xxx

That Body shop drops of sun really sounds like something I’ll need eventually!
Otherwise I can only use high-end or possibly mid-range products (depending on definition) because those (Mary Kay) have been the miracle cure for my acne when ALL else has failed.

      March 28, 2018 / 10:33 pm

I just love the Body Shop product. Such a multi-use product. I understand what you mean, I found that my skins redness evened out with higher end products, so tend to be pretty loyal to them. Thanks for reading xx

  12. March 28, 2018 / 3:05 pm

You posted some good options. I never tried anything from kiko but this brand did a good job in making affordable products. I really want to try maybelline age rewind concealer.

That interesting. I did costume and makeup design in theater in college. So I know how to apply make up when I want to. I have sensitive skin, so I get super picky about what I use.

Really enjoyed this post Kerry, a lot of fabulous dupes/similar products here! I’ve heard primark are doing some good dupes for the naked pallettes but have yet to try them!xx

      March 29, 2018 / 10:03 pm

Hi Linda, thank you for stopping by. I love a cream eyeshadow for the blendability, but often use a light coloured cream eyeshadow as my base, then a darker powder shadow for the outer edges. the cream shadow makes a fab base. Cream eyeshadow sticks are fab for quickness. Hope that helps!
